Fitbit Launches Heart Study to Validate its Wearable Technology for Identifying Atrial Fibrillation

  • Fitbit launched the Fitbit Heart Study- which focuses to validate the use of its wearables to detect AFib. The virtual study is open to Fitbit users aged 22yrs. + with a current Fitbit device and will enroll hundreds of thousands of people with its results supporting the Company’s regulatory submissions globally
  • Fitbit's devices use photoplethysmography technology to measure blood flow rate from a user's wrist and those measurements can be used to identify heart rhythm- which Fitbit's algorithm will analyze for irregularities in the study
  • Participants who are notified with an irregular heart rhythm will get a free virtual appointment with a doctor and mailed with an ECG patch to confirm the notification. Additionally- With the launch of the heart study- Fitbit is giving competition to Apple which received FDA clearance in 2018 for its ECG feature and launched a study with J&J to explore whether its wearables can detect Afib
