Fraunhofer MEVIS' Experts Develops Intelligent Catheter Navigation System in Germany

Shots:

  • Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS has developed IntelliCath- an intelligent catheter navigation to precisely navigate the catheter into the blood vessels in applying stents or removing blood clots
  • The catheter is equipped with optical fiber containing tiny mirrors reflecting a portion of the light that changes color when the fibre bends which provide the information on intensity and direction of the vessel curvature
  • IntelliCath is a thin flexible wire inserted into the vascular system enabling to provide live position of the catheter with precision of up to 5mm. The researcher plans to assess catheter on a full-body phantom of the human vascular system and a pig lung with its prototype for clinical trials in H2’19
