Stanford Medicine Reports Results of Apple Heart Study for Detecting Atrial Fibrillation

- The Apple Heart Study was started in Nov’2017 in conjunction with the release of Apple’s fourth-generation smartwatch and watchOS 4. The study evaluated 419-297 participants and demonstrated that 0.5% of them received irregular heart rhythm notifications- published in NEJM
- Those who were flagged for an irregular pulse received follow-up care via the ECG patch. During ECG patch monitoring- participants’ Apple Watches continued to monitor pulse irregularities. If a participant had an irregular pulse detected- 84% of the time it was confirmed to be AF on the simultaneous ECG patch
- The study results demonstrated that the algorithm in the Apple Watch can successfully detect AF. Among participants with a notified irregular pulse- the positive predictive value was 0.84 for observing AF on the ECG simultaneously with a subsequent irregular pulse notification and 0.71 for observing AF on the ECG simultaneously with a subsequent irregular tachogram
